Things To Do In Adelaide

Adelaide was founded in 1836 and was named after Saxe Meinigen, it is also the capital of South Australia. If you love wildlife, wine tasting or coastal walks they are all within easy reach of Adelaide. I have visited Adelaide several times the past few years, it is one of the places that will always be special to me as it is where I discovered my passion for photography. South Australia is well known as the wildlife state, when you visit Adelaide you will understand why.

Coastal Walks

Two of my favourite beaches are Aldinga Beach and Port Willunga. Aldinga beach is within walking distance of Silver sands beach which has crystal clear waters and is the only beach where you can drive on and park your car. With its crystal clear waters and the size of it, this is the ideal beach for swimmers and surfers.  Port Willunga on the Fleur Peninsula is a coastal village where you will find ancient ruins and shipwrecks, Port Willunga beach is a 40 minute drive South of Adelaide. Along the white sandy beach surrounded by golden cliffs you will see caves that were carved out by fishermen to store their boats, today families use them for picnics. The beach is one of the most stunning beaches I have visited in South Australia.

Things To Do For Wildlife Lovers

For bird watchers, wildlife and nature lovers there are some lovely wetlands and beaches near Adelaide including River Torrens and West beach where you will be able to see not only pelicans but also Australian Pied Cornorants birds that are native to the coastal areas of  Australasia. West beach is a seaside suburb of Adelaide, it is ideal for families who enjoy swimming, paddleboarding and kite surfing and for bird watchers this is a fantastic beach to get up close with the pelicans, I did not expect to see so many pelicans and could not believe how close you can get to them. River Torrens is the most important river of the Adelaide Plains and was one of the reasons for the sighting of the city of Adelaide.

Adelaide Zoo is the only zoo in Australia where you can see the two giant pandas Wang wang and Funi, I managed to get photos of Wang wang during his feeding time. I was very excited as this was my first time seeing a giant panda. Adelaide Zoo is easy to get to by public transport you can take a cruise along the river and get off at the zoo.

If you would like to experience some of the Australian Wildlife in their natural habitat you can take the sealink ferry to Kangaroo Island which is 45 minutes or a 30 minute flight from Adelaide airport. There are 4 departures daily with sealink from Cape Jervis which is 2 hours drive from Adelaide. Kangaroo island was my dream trip that I had been excited about the most, one of the places you must visit is Seal Bay Conservation Park where you can spend time with the Australian Sea Lion Colony, they are one of the rarest species in the world. You can watch them up close from a boardwalk on the beach. When I visited Seal Bay I was in my element watching the seals and their pups. If you want a good chance of seeing the seal pups the best time to visit is during breeding season from November to February. Kangaroo island is a very diverse place where you can see not only seal lions but aso koalas and pelican, it is a wildlife haven. Kangaroo island got its name when the British first explored the island and found kangaroos.

If you are visiting Adelaide for a holiday there are a variety of things to do with your family or friends including wine tasting tours in Barossa Valley in the Adelaide Hills, coastal walks at some of the beaches Aldinga and Port Willunga, Monarto Zoo that have a walk through enclosure with Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies in and Gorge Wildlife Park where you can meet koalas in the koala holding area and take part in kangaroo feeding, it is one of my favourite places for getting close to some of the Australian Wildlife.

For anyone who has moved into their new home or is looking for coastal images to add some colour to their rooms I have a variety of prints from Australia available to purchase in my online shop on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/NatashaBalletta?ref=seller-platform-mcnav&section_id=21810193
